There are a wide variety of benefits to learning a new language and Alliance Française de
Rockhampton recognises that people learn French for different reasons. Some of the reasons our
students learn French include:
Communication
Many students have travelled or plan to travel overseas. The travel experience can be enhanced by
knowing some key French phrases and to be able to communicate with locals in their own language.
Speaking another's language shows respect for that culture, and people in every country prefer it
when tourists make an effort to speak the local language.
Wide spread use of French
French is ranked the 2nd most influential language of the world and is spoken as a native
language in more than two dozen countries on five continents!
Depending on your sources, French has 72-79 million native speakers and another 190 million
secondary speakers. French is the second most commonly taught second language in the world
(after English), making it a real possibility that speaking French will come in handy practically
anywhere you travel.

Learning French is intellectually stimulating!
Learning another language can help one understand their own language better. Studies have also
shown that students who study another language, often do better academically. Foreign language
study can also help to increase problem-solving skills, self-discipline and can help to ward off
memory loss!
Learning French is fun!
As well as meeting other students, people can expect to be exposed to many other activities such as
film nights, dinners, conversation group meetings and other special events. In addition, when you
speak another language, you can enjoy literature, film, and music in the original language.
